PTA Uniform Sale

The children were told that during next week's Eco Club session we will be helping the PTA to sell uniform that has been recycled from past pupils and from parent donations. We are excited to get involved as we feel it is very 'eco'

to recycle/reuse uniform in this way !

Fairtrade

We also discussed our up and coming topic of 'Fairtrade' and wanted to think of ideas on how to get the whole school involved with this topic. We got together in groups and discussed our ideas which we recorded on group sheets (see Eco Club page for photos). Some great ideas which will be put into place ready for Fairtrade Fortnight!

Graffiti Wall

Amir and Millie asked the club to put their thoughts about Eco Club down on a 'graffiti wall' (paper!). This will inform them on pupils' wants and likes in terms of clubs - this is research for a seperate leadership course they are completing to improve our school.

January 12th 2016

Wheelbarrow Competition

Mr Walsh explained about a great competition we'd like to get involved with, for which we have to create a wheelbarrow design with the theme of 'Roald Dahl'. We had a great discussion on what this could include...more details to follow!

Fairtrade

In preparation for 'Fairtrade Fortnight', which begins in February, Eco Club played the 'Banana Split' game where each group took on a role of a worker within the banana trade. It was an interesting game which led to a great discussion on how fair the wages were for each worker. We think it'll be a great game to spark debate during Fairtade Fortnight for the rest of the pupils!

10 Day Turndown Prizes

We had a visit today from  Mr Roberts, the person responsible for organising the 10 day turndown in schools. He presented the children with prizes for their great efforts when saving energy!

Each child recieved the following:

- A portable solar powered battery charger.
- An energy monitor for their homes.

- A tool to help save water from your shower.

A special shoutout also to Daisy who recieved a special 'Eco Kettle' for her particular efforts during the 10 day turndown.

Eco Code

We also continued with our iPad 'Pic Collages' of our school Eco Code. Some people managed to finish, but some didn't, so we will continue next week.

Green Flag

We began this week's session by talking about applying for the green flag in the near future.

We discussed what the green flag was and some of the requirements for us to achieve 'Green Flag Status'!

One of these being that we need to present our 'Eco Code' around the school. We looked at the Eco Code created by last year's Eco Club and discussed it's meaning.

Children then paired up to create their own poster of our Eco Code to place around the school.

These aren't quite finished yet so will be continued next week.

Keep an eye on our Eco Club main page; we'll publish our posters when they are completed..!

Planting Bulbs

Mr Walsh ended the session by showing us a PowerPoint on the importance of researching how plants grow in different parts of the world. This linked to our recent planting of spring bulbs to research the affects of climate change.

See PowerPoint below for more details.

Why are we planting bulbs?

November 10th 2015

In attendance: Sophie, Millie H, Emir, Sam, Iolo, Millie P, Kate, Chloe, Nina, Luca, Evie, Isaac, Edward, Gracie, Amir, Mr Walsh and Mr Morgan.

10 Day Turndown

We began this week's session by looking at the 10 Day Turndown table of results.

- We also discussed how proud we were of our 11% reduction in energy usage over the 10 days!

This got us thinking - could we save all of this energy for the whole year..?!

So each week we are going to allocate 2 members of the Eco Club to check on all the classrooms around the school to check they are being energy efficient - at least on Tuesdays!

- We are also going to make sure each week that the ICT suite computers are all turned off - perhaps suggesting to classes that they have ICT monitors during their ICT slots to help us too!

Recycling!

We then discussed the chance of having recycling workshops for the pupils soon (Mr Walsh to organise) which led onto a discussion on what could/couldn't be recycled. This turned into a fun quiz type game which Eco Club thoroughly enjoyed!

Lastly we placed a poster created by last year's Eco Club onto every recycling bin in the classrooms to remind staff and pupils what they can recycle. See our main Eco Page for a copy of this document. +

November 3rd 2015

In attendance: Sophie, Millie H, Emir, Sam, Iolo, Millie P, Kate, Chloe, Nina, Luca, Evie, Isaac, Marley, Edward, Gracie, Amir, Mr Walsh and Mr Morgan.

Today we teamed up with TEAM HEALTH to begin work together on a project!

Planting!

We began our session today by talking about a new project Mr Walsh has got us involved in where schools from all over the uk are working in partnership with the Edina Trust to plant various bulbs in our outdoor area.

We will then monitor the bulb's progress by collecting data on the temperature and rainfall. The children in Eco Club and Team Health are super excited about the project and thoroughly enjoyed getting their hands dirty! (Look at the photos on the Eco/Team Health sections to see us getting stuck in!)

Ten Day Turndown...

We also discussed our thoughts on how the 10 day turndown went - postive thoughts all round. We agreed as a group to keep making sure we are saving as much energy as possible!

We are awaiting the results of our final position in the 10 day turn down competition!

October 13th 2015

In attendance: Sophie, Millie H, Emir, Sam, Iolo, Millie P, Kate, Chloe, Nina, Luca, Evie, Isaac, Marley, Edward, Natasha, Gracie, Amir, Mr Walsh and Mr Morgan.

10 Day Turndown

We began our session today by looking at the checklist sheets for the 10 day turndown.

The children discussed the different elements of the sheets and we discussed the importance of getting everybody in the school on board!

Then we decided to get started with the checking.

Each KS2 member joined up with a Foundation Phase child to create a partnership.

Each pair then took turns to 'check' the energy usage in each classroom and gave the teacher either a star or a speech bubble with targets.

Class 5, 10 and 11 all recieved stars - Da iawn! Everybody else needed to improve on their energy use.

We discussed who would go around during lunchtimes to check on the classrooms.

We will come together next week to discuss how the turndown event has gone.

October 6th 2015

In attendance: Sophie, Millie H, Emir, Sam, Iolo, Millie P, Kate, Chloe, Nina, Luca, Evie, Isaac, Marley, Edward, Natasha, Gracie, Amir, Mr Walsh and Mr Morgan.

10 Day Turndown

This week we concentrated on the up and coming 10 day turndown. We continued with our poster designs to promote and advertise the 10 day turndown. We will upload pictures of these soon!

Then we decided where to place each of the posters, in the best places to advertise the 10 day turndown.

We also spoke about how we will monitor the energy usage over the 10 days.

We decided that it was best for 2 pupils to monitor classrooms during lunchtimes for the 10 days. During these monitoring sessions, the children will have questions to answer which will give the class an energy saving score for that day (out of 8). If they have 8/8 the classroom will have a special star placed on the front of the door. If they don't quite get all 8 ticks, then the children will place a speech bubble with notes written on how that class can improve - again placed on the front door.

A very productive session all in all!

September 29th 2015

In attendance: Sophie, Millie H, Emir, Daisy, Sam, Iolo, Millie P, Kate, Chloe, Nina, Luca, Evie, Isaac, Marley, Edward, Natasha, Gracie, Amir, Maddie, Mr Walsh and Mr Morgan.

Energy Day

We recapped the day that the children had, talking about what kind of workshops the upper juniors recieved. This led onto a great discussion regarding 'Cars of the Future' which stemmed from Class 5's energy day task.

10 Day Turndown

We spoke about the up and coming 10 day turndown. We asked and answered questions such as 'Why is it important?' and 'How can we promote saving energy?'

One way to promote and advertise the 10 day turndown was to design posters - so we did!

We will finish these next week...! Stay tuned for pics!

- Welcome

Everyone introduced themselves.

We welcomed everyone and explained what we wanted to achieve this year.

We explained the exciting new changes that have happened with Radnor's Eco Club over the last year. Our resident Eco Veteran Amir explained some of the exciting developments.

- Tour

We toured the school to look at exisiting planters and how much they have developed. We asked the question 'Could we improve bio-diversity in our school?'

- Flowers

To end the session we 'dead headed' sunflowers to allow new ones to grow - maybe they'll take over soon...!

With the old seeds we sought advice from our local community gardener Victor who suggested we wrap the dead heads in newspaper and boxed them up in a dry, warm room. They will then be replanted later in the year.

WOW! What an exciting Eco Club meeting of 2015/16 - Can't wait for more!
