Reading

It is important that you read with your child every day.  Please record when they have read in their reading record.  

Tips to help support your child to improve their reading:

• Listen to your child read.

When your child starts bringing books home from school, have them read to you. If it doesn’t sound good (mistakes, choppy reading), read it to them and then ask them to read it again.  Modelled reading can help to make the children better readers, as you have modelled how it should be read.

• Ask questions.

When your child reads, ask them to retell the story or information. If it’s a story, ask who it was about and what happened. If it’s an information text, ask your child to explain what it was about and how it worked, or what its parts were. Reading involves not just sounding out words, but thinking about and remembering ideas and events. Improving reading comprehension skills early will prepare them for their reading comprehension tests at the end of the year.

• Make reading a regular activity in your home.

Make reading a part of your daily life, and your child will learn to love it. Set aside some time when everyone turns off the TV and the web and does nothing but read. Make it fun, too, if your child sees reading as an enjoyable task then they will certainly develop a love for reading.

• Visit the library.

Visit the library as often as possible - take out CDs and DVDs as well as books.

• Choose books that interest.

Look for books on topics that you know your child is interested in - maybe dragons, insects, cookery or a certain sport.

Big Maths

We use Big Maths on a daily basis to develop our pupils' numeracy skills. It is a fun and engaging teaching method that translates maths into simple steps that allows each child to progress.

At the end of every week the children do Big maths beat that! Where they try and beat their score from the previous week.
